My mom often sends little packages for Grant and yesterday one arrived. Tucked inside was this picture along with a photocopy of a journal type entry my mom had written the fall of 1980. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing a bit of what a young mother of three was observing, recording, sharing, teaching and preserving....and the insight into the future. Those of you who know me well, will understand what I mean.
Dear Curt, Lanson, Kimberly and Darin,
I'm writing this on a beautiful Fall Friday while watching you children enjoy an hour at the playground. I'm grateful for the good health and sound bodies you're blessed with.....I too am grateful for my renewed health. A fine check-up yesterday reminded me that it was three years ago I began treatment for stage 2 Hodgkin’s disease. I'm eternally grateful for having the opportunity to see you grow and develop. Each of you is special....
....Kimberly, alias Miss Blue Eyes or Princess. You are five and enjoying your first school experience. You are apprehensive about new situations at first. Once you overcome this initial fear you make friends and enjoy yourself. You seem to be attracted to "the arts". You love music and dance. You enjoy listening to tape stories and records. I enjoy listening to the stories and "lessons" and poems you create. I know that you would like a sister. You wish for it on birthdays....
I read this yesterday afternoon while sitting on our back deck watching Grant play in the sandbox. I was amazed at the observations made so long ago of me and my siblings as young children...and how accurate they are today of our individuality. I am grateful for a mother who noticed this and cultivated this. I am grateful for a mother who has always shown and expressed her love for me. I am grateful for my brothers and sisters and their unique personalities.
I am grateful for my son. As I watched him play and thought about his little personality, his attributes and talents and what this tells me about his future and what it might hold. I'm grateful for his new sibling so close to entering the world and the partnership Mark and I have in raising these precious souls.
My heart is once again full. Thank you Mom, I love you.

Beautiful Kim. I'm so happy for the joy in your life! You are a wonderful person. Thanks for sharing your goodness & beauty.
Sorry you had to wait another 2 years for a little sister, but I'm glad I could fulfil your birthday wish :)
What a nice keepsake to have!
That is precious. It is amazing how acurate that description of you at age 5 still fits you today!
Wow! I loved the picture of your family (minus your two future birthday present sisters) and the sweet words your mother had to say. So wonderful that she took the time write them down.

how sweet & observant of your mom, the letter the picture..and thanks for sharing it with us. Inspires me to do the same for my kids for the future.
Wow, that was so precious. I hope I am as keen as your mom was in observing my children and recording it. My grandma recorded 5 pages in a journal during her entire life, all in the last days during Kidney Dialasis. My fondest memory, and greatest inspiration to keep a journal of my own, was her brief mention of 'her little sparkle girl' and the words she used in those two sentences about me. I think many of us take for granted to many things around us. I know I have, and I have learned, and continue to learn. Thanks for the wonderful thoughts.
Your mom also gave us one and I immediately thought how perfectly she described you. And how Haden has some of the same characteristics as Darin did.
That made me cry- so sweet. It's a good reminder of how precious journals are. I've been really bad about keeping a journal since my mission and it's time I pick it up again.
LOVED the photo and it really was neat to see how at such a young age you were the Kim you are today.
Did your mom keep a journal throughout your growing up years? That is amazing how you did start out as "Kimberly" from the very beginning. Thanks for sharing!
I can't believe how much you look like Grant in that picture....and I agree, your mom had you pegged from the beginning. :) That paragraph describes you today.
So pretty...
