Several people have asked about aperture and lenses. I will attempt in my less than expertise words to explain this. Basically the aperture is the amount of light that is let in, the lower the f-stop (or aperture) the more light will get let in. Here is a diagram to help explain:
An aperture is a hole or an opening through which light is admitted. The lens aperture is usually specified as an f-number, the ratio of focal length to effective aperture diameter. A lens typically has a set of marked "f-stops" that the f-number can be set to. A lower f-number denotes a greater aperture opening which allows more light to reach the film or image sensor.(-wikipedia)
Since I prefer natural light, when choosing what lenses to purchase I am interested in those with low apertures...to take full advantage of light. Another question I get is what lenses I use most or have. My 50mm f/1.8, 60mm f/2.8 macro and my newest addition 17-55mm f/2.8 all work well with letting in abundant light. My 18-200mm f/3.5 zoom is a great lens, but doesn't work as well in low light as the mentioned others. If I had to choose a favorite lens right now, it would be my latest addition....for the time being.
With this said it's only one part of equation...there is also other settings to play around with in conjunction with aperture to get the effect you want in a picture. Mostly I am happy when more light is let in, I can take pictures inside without the flash as to have a more natural feel and outside take advantage of the light throughout the day.
OK, it's getting way to serious and I don't even know if I know what I'm talking about....so let's have some fun...and here's to keeping it real!
I just had to share this photo. Grant has been such a trooper and has accompanied me on many a photo shoot and has a tendency to sometimes get bored or jealous of me taking pictures of other people. (I wonder why when he has the lens on him almost 24-7?) Here is a perfect example. Every time I went to try and take a picture of these two sisters...Grant had to join in. I got several of them all together smiling....and this is the result I got when I asked him to move out of the shot so I could just get the two girls. Doesn't his expression say it all!
Have a great weekend, doing anything fun?

What a charachter. Cute picture though. Thanks for the aperture lesson, I have no idea about that stuff. Is there any keys to how I can use no flash with the kids, but not have them be blurry if they move? Do I need a better camera? Can you fix the aperture on a normal camera? You can email me if you have the time. I really love the natural light, but Landon just doesn't sit still anymore and for that matter I guess Ethan and Madie don't either.
oh, that is funny!
That picture is so funny. Thank you for writing this out. I talk myself through some shots. Like okay "I want to let in more light so I better...." You get the idea. So hopefully one day I will be able to do it like a pro and not have to think so hard about it.
Someday when we get our fancy camera I'm going to have to re-read all your Friday Funs.
Love Grant's lip action!
I miss that little boy..... and that face!!!!! Too cute.
What a great face! I love it. And thanks for the f-stop advice. Hope you had a great weekend!
