Diversity

One of the things I've been pleasantly surprised with moving to Huntsville, Alabama is the diversity of life we've come across. With the arrival of spring creatures seem to be coming out of the wood work. Saturday morning on a family walk we counted seven snakes, countless ducks, turtles, fish, insects and a few Blue Herons, not to mention the blooming spring flowers and blossoms in all their variety.

Another variety of life we've come across are the people we've met, seen or interacted with here. A few months ago I met a woman from the Ukraine who spoke Russian and her daughter at the sand pit with Grant. Today again at the sand pit we met a man with his daughter from Frankfurt, Germany. His daughter speaks English, German and Spanish (her mother is Mexican). German is a language we actually hear quite often when walking the lake or even at the grocery store! At library story time there are a group of Korean women who bring their children. When we've gone to check on our house progress we've noticed about four families in the neighborhood who seem to be of Asian decent, we're excited to learn where they are from. Our Relief Society president (the women's church organization) is from Brazil-I love to hear her speak! And of course I have to mention the good old Southerners, love their charm, hospitality and accents!

Unfortunately I haven't captured these people or creatures all in a photograph, but felt appreciative today for my exposure to them.

You are so lucky! That is one of the saddest things about living in my town in particular. I was asking my piano student if there were any kids in her class who spoke Spanish and she said she didn't know of anyone. It sounds like you live in the coolest place. I wonder why there are so many German speakers.

To answer Amy's question: After WWII in preperation for the space age, the Alabamaians courted German scientists and convinced them to come to Alabama and help create what is now the US space program. Warner Van Braun was the head German guy and came over with his team (thus we have the "Van Braun" center in downtown Huntsville where you can go and see concerts etc)...and thus the German influence. There is also Siemens here (a large German company that designs and produces automobile parts).

Sounds almost like Hawaii, minus the beach!
